Join the Bleeding Disorders Foundation of North Carolina (BDFNC) at Suffolk Punch, Southpark location, for a community dinner and educational presentation about the role factor 8 plays in the development of bones and bone density. Claudio Sandoval, M.D. will present. Impact of Factor 8 on Bone Mineralization. In addition to blood clotting, factor 8 plays an important role in the development of bones and bone density. Beyond the risk of joint damage, people with hemophilia are also at risk for reduced bone density and osteoporosis. These conditions can result in weak and brittle bones and an increased risk of bone fractures. This presentation will cover the difference between joint health and bone mineralization, possible mechanisms underlying bone formation and bone reabsorption, and the role of factor 8 in maintaining joint and bone health.
Dr. Sandoval spent much of his career treating children with cancer and bleeding disorders at New York Medical College. He is an expert in hemophilia, leukemia, and sickle cell disease. He also works with college and medical students who are learning about these disorders. Dr. Sandoval graduated from New York Medical College in 1987. He trained in pediatrics at Schneider Children’s Hospital. He also trained in children’s blood disorders and cancer (pediatric hematology-oncology) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At Octapharma, Dr. Sandoval is the Director of Scientific and Medical Affairs in Hematology.
