Navigating puberty and periods can be challenging, especially for those with bleeding disorders. This interactive session, led by Drs. Juhi Jain and Tara Streich-Tilles from Duke Hematology, is designed for individuals ages 10-18 who have or had the potential to menstruate and their guardians. We’ll cover key topics like managing periods with a bleeding disorder, understanding puberty changes, and advocating for proper care. This open and informative discussion will include a Q&A, so bring your questions!

Meet The Speakers

Juhi Jain, MD is a board certified pediatric hematology-oncology physician and Assistant Professor at Duke University School of Medicine. Her outpatient focus is pediatric hematology and she is the director of Hemostasis and Thrombosis. Dr. Jain has served as the pediatric director of the Arizona Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center-Tucson, the Women’s Bleeding Disorder Clinic and the pediatric Sickle Cell program at Banner University Medical Center Tucson and the University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Jain was the site principal investigator on the Health Resources and Services Administration grant with the Pacific Sickle Cell Regional Collaborative that strives to improve the health and quality of life of individuals with sickle cell disease. She is passionate about utilizing health policy to improve quality of life and outcomes for underserved patients. She completed her fellowship in July 2021 at the Emory School of Medicine with scholarly graduation from the Health Equity, Advocacy and Policy track. During fellowship she was the CURE Childhood Cancer Foundation Sam Robb Fellow, the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Hematology Oncology Executive Committee Fellow Liaison and the fellow representative on the Aflac Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. She completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in general pediatrics and received her MD from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine with scholarly graduation from the Health Law Pathway. Dr. Jain’s extensive advocacy experience includes education of healthcare professionals, legislative advocacy at the local, state and national level and co-founding two city-wide victim services models focused on healthcare for victims of human trafficking. She has expanded her advocacy work to her subspecialty of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and participated in the American Society of Hematology Advocacy Leadership Institute, Hemophilia Academy and the American Academy of Pediatrics Legislative Conference. Dr. Jain is currently president of the American Women’s Medical Association Physicians Against the Trafficking of Humans and from 2021-2024 was the co-chair of the advocacy committee. Dr. Jain has written several case reports and review articles in the field of pediatric hematology-oncology and she has presented her work both nationally and internationally. |

Tara Streich-Tilles, MD, MPH is a board-certified gynecologist with fellowship-training in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, one of few specialists in North Carolina with this advanced expertise. Her work is dedicated to the medical and surgical management of reproductive and gynecologic health concerns for young patients, including complex menstrual issues, and she has presented on this work locally and nationally. She completed her undergraduate degree and master’s degree in public health at Yale University, and medical school at the Albany Medical College. She completed residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and fellowship in pediatric and adolescent gynecology at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. As an assistant professor at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, she served as Co-Director of the Comprehensive Fertility Care and Preservation Program. She joined Duke Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology in 2023. She is Director of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology and Co-Director of Fertility Preservation for Duke. Dr. Streich-Tilles’ research interests include pediatric and adolescent fertility preservation and survivorship care. She serves on the Education Committee of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, is a member of the Oncofertility Consortium Pediatric Initiative Network, and leads Duke’s participation in the Reproductive Health Outcomes and Preservation Experiences, the first national oncofertility database in the United States. |
